Lake Ashburton is a historic body of water located in the Ashburton neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland. Once a popular recreational spot for locals, the lake has undergone significant changes in recent years due to a major construction project.
In 2018, the Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW) began a large-scale project to construct two underground reservoirs near Lake Ashburton. These reservoirs, designed to store drinking water, were intended to improve the city’s water supply. However, the project faced significant opposition from local residents who were concerned about the impact on their neighborhood and the environment.
The construction process led to the temporary closure of the park, the removal of numerous trees, and disruptions to daily life for many residents. Some residents expressed frustration over the project’s timeline, the condition of the lake during construction, and the lack of communication from city officials.
Despite the challenges, the city has plans to revitalize the Lake Ashburton area. Once the reservoir project is completed, the DPW intends to restore the lake and surrounding parkland. This may include adding new amenities, such as walking trails, playgrounds, and recreational facilities.
